Welcome to Year 3, the teachers this year will be Mr Holloway, Miss Hughes and Mrs Kyriacou.
This half term Year 3 will be learning all about Locational Knowledge! We will be researching the continents of the world, as well as some of the countries within them. This will be the the stimulus for a variety of work including literacy, art, history and, of course, geography. We will be using our knowledge of physical geography to make comparisons between different places and countries.

Last half term Year 3 were learning all about the Stone Age! We were researching a variety of themes such as Stonehenge and daily life for a person in the Stone Age. This was the stimulus for a variety of work including literacy, art, history and geography. We explored evidence such as pictures and artefacts to discover more about what life was like for people who lived during the Stone Age to Iron Age period.

• Make a fact file about a country of your choice – Use the internet or a trip to the local library to help you!
• Can you design and make a new flag for a recently discovered country? Use existing flag designs to give you ideas!
• Can you research an existing recipe for an international food dish and cook it with your adults’ help. You could take some photos and bring them in to show us!p>
• Test whether items and materials in the home are magnetic. Remember to recoird your results.
Challenge Yourself! Stone Age
• Make a model of a Stone Age home – see if you can find resources in the garden!
• Can you create your own recipe for a Stone Age meal? Remember to use the features of instructions!
• Can you design your own Stone Age clothing? Remember what materials were available?
• Invent your own prehistoric animal and write a description of it.
In English we will be focusing on persuasive and emotive language. We will be learning about the features of diaries, letters and persuasive adverts. Year 3 will also be looking at the different types of word classes, such as pronouns, adverbial phrases and adjectives and using these in our writing. We will also be continuing to use connectives to extend sentences and using punctuated speech in our writing, as well as focusing on different sentence openers. Our focus text will be ‘Katie in London’ which will be used as a stimulus for our diary and letter writing.

During our Stone Age learning journey, in English we were focusing on different types of information texts. We learnt about the features of instructions, adverts and information leaflets. Year 3 also looked at the different types of word classes, such as nouns, verbs and adjectives and used these for descriptive writing. We also used connectives to extend sentences and used punctuated speech in our writing. Our focus text was ‘Ug’ which we used as a stimulus for our descriptive writing, where Year 3 we focused on describing characters and settings.
In Maths this half term Year 3 will be focusing on addition and subtraction. We will be using various methods, such as mental, number lines and written methods. We will also be using bar modelling to help us work out the difference and identify different number sentences. We will be using lots of practical resources to help us. We will then be applying this when solving word problems and using the inverse to check our answers. This half terms we will be focusing on our own 3, 4, 6 and 7 times tables.

In Maths last half term Year 3 were focusing on Number and Place Value. We were investigating and exploring the place value of digits in numbers up to 1000, using lots of practical resources to help us. This helped us to order and compare numbers and round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000! We also partitioned numbers to show the value of each digit.
This half term, we will be learning about Magnets and Forces. As part of this topic we will learn about the poles on a magnet, repel and attract, the strengths of magnets and which materials are magnetic. We will also be planning and completing our own investigations.

Last half term, we learnt about Rocks and Soils. As part of this topic we were learning about the different types of rocks, fossils and soils. We sorted these into groups, discussing properties and learning how rocks are formed. We also planned and completed our own investigations.
Year 3 will be learning how places have changed and developed over time, we will be doing this by analysing a range of pictures.
Year 3 were learning about the 3 different periods of the Stone Age, where we looked at how people evolved through the ages, using timelines to place events in chronological order and researched how life changed over time.
This half term, we will using a range of sources to learn what the continents of the world are as well as some of the countries that can be found in them. We will also be using physical geography to compare and contrast different countries.
Last half term we were using our mapping skills to locate where people from the Stone Age settled; we looked at the physical geography of Skara Brae and used maps to follow the route the Stone Age people used when building Stonehenge.
This half term we will be learning about the main religions and locating them on a world map. We will also be learning about famous religious buildings around the world.
Last half term we were researching the beliefs of people from the Stone Age and Iron Age period and understanding the importance of Stonehenge.
D&T / Art
This half term we will be learning about the famous artist Kandinsky, where we will analyse his artwork, investigate the techniques and mediums used and create our own paintings using his style.
Last half term we were learning about cave paintings where we identified the different colours used in the paintings, understood why cave paintings were so important to people from the Stone Age and experimented with a range of colour mixing and brush techniques to create our own cave paintings.
Year 3 will be reviewing online safety rules and completing the pupil online safety acceptable use agreement form. The whole class will sign A3 Queenswell online safety rules for display in class. We will also be logging onto network with .302 account, Dance Mat typing skills, saving & logging off, aswell as behaving respectfully online & passwords.
Year 3 will learn a range of basic instrument and rhythmical music skills and show a clear understanding using musical vocabulary. We will apply our musical skills and knowledge to our main topics: the symphony orchestra, ostinatos and music theory.
Year 3 will be learning the days of the week, the months, numbers 1-31 , colours and the names of some animals. We will use greetings, introduce ourselves, say how we are feeling, how old we are, when our birthday is and what our favourite colour is.
We will also learn how to say the date in Spanish and locate Spain on a world map and know the capital city is Madrid.
PE and swimming
This half term in Indoor PE we will be creating our own dances to reflect mood and music. During Outdoor PE we will be learning about the different passes and skills needed when playing football.
Last half term during Indoor PE lessons, we were using a range of curls, stretches, balances and travelling skills to create a sequence. During Outdoor PE, we were focusing on invasion games where we learnt attacking and defending skills, as well as a variety of different styles of throwing.
Your child is expected to have appropriate PE kit with them for every session. The timetabled PE days are as follows: 3DH – Tuesday Indoor and Friday Outdoor
3VP – Wednesday Indoor and Friday Outdoor 3VH – Wednesday Indoor and Friday Outdoor
Year 3 will start swimming lessons as of February 2018.
This year, children will expected to practise their times tables and spellings each week for homework and should be reading every night. Spellings are out on a Tuesday and children will be tested on the following Tuesday. Times tables will be out on Tuesday and tested the following week. Children are expected to read every night.
